چکیده

This paper discusses the findings on the viewpoint of an avatar-controlling user on the basis of experimentation with an implemented avatar-mediated telecommunication system. Communication using an avatar with facial expressions is useful when a user wants to express emotions. On top of this feature, our system supports automatic avatar movement toward nearest visible location to the target, which is not obvious for the avatar controller. With our system, the avatar controller can easily refer to something remotely. However, sometimes, the words of an avatar controller may not be intuitive for an avatar viewer, because the avatar controller does not necessarily share the viewpoint of the avatar. We designed full-automatic and guide-automatic methods for controlling the avatar, and we conducted an experiment to compare the two methods. The results showed that guide-automatic control was more intuitive than full-automatic control for an avatar viewer, and they have design implications for avatar-mediated telecommunication systems.

The Role of Avatar in Interactive Fictional World of Video Games

In third-person video games, players are able to move and progress in the interactive world of the game while watching their avatar from an external point of view. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of avatar in the interactive imaginary world of video games using double vision theory. This article is based on descriptive-analytical methods and the use of library data and imag...

Effect of avatars and viewpoints on performance in virtual world: efficiency vs. telepresence

An increasing number of our interactions are mediated through e-technologies. In order to enhance the human’s feeling of presence into these virtual environments, also known as telepresence, the individual is usually embodied into an avatar. The natural adaptation capabilities, underlain by the plasticity of the body schema, of the human being make a body ownership of the avatar possible, in wh...

The Role of Eye Gaze in Avatar Mediated Conversational Interfaces

As we begin to create synthetic characters (avatars) for computer users, it is important to pay attention to both the look and the behavior of the avatar’s eyes. In this paper we present behavior models of eye gaze patterns in the context of real-time verbal communication. We apply these eye gaze models to simulate eye movements in a computergenerated avatar in a number of task settings. We als...

Homuncular Flexibility in Virtual Reality

Immersive virtual reality allows people to inhabit avatar bodies that differ from their own, and this can produce significant psychological and physiological effects. The concept of homuncular flexibility (Lanier, 2006) proposes that users can learn to control bodies different from their own by changing the relationship between tracked and rendered motion. We examine the effects of remapping mo...

Inertial Sensor-Based Touch and Shake Metaphor for Expressive Control of 3D Virtual Avatars

In this paper, we present an inertial sensor-based touch and shake metaphor for expressive control of a 3D virtual avatar in a virtual environment. An intuitive six degrees-of-freedom wireless inertial motion sensor is used as a gesture and motion control input device with a sensor fusion algorithm. The algorithm enables user hand motions to be tracked in 3D space via magnetic, angular rate, an...
